Pilates – how often should I do it?

How often should I do Pilates? This is a question I get asked all the time! And as with most things the answer is there is no ‘one size fits all’! However, it stands to reason that if you practice perhaps more frequently than once a week you will notice more of a difference. As a result you may also achieve your goals much faster.

Why do I do Pilates?

Some people practice purely because they enjoy it. For many it is an essential tool to remain fit and healthy. Those who use Pilates alongside other forms of exercise and are not addressing a specific issue, such as lower back pain, may find a weekly class is enough.

However, if you are undertaking regular Pilates practice to change or help an aspect of your body or your overall fitness then once a week is probably not enough to make these changes.

So how often should I do it?

Joseph Pilates, the founder of the method advocated at least 10 minutes practice a day. If you have a home programme, following a Clinical Pilates one to one session, then these exercises have been given to you to target a really specific problem or dysfunction. In this situation a short session each day is definitely recommended.

If you are further into your Pilates journey and attending classes regularly then you could do 3 classes or sessions a week. Choose 2 slightly more challenging ones and an easier one focusing on the foundations of movement, stretch and mobility.

Our online classes are ideal for this, warm up for the week with our ‘Progress’ class on a Monday. Have a rest day on Tuesday, rise to the ‘Challenge’ on Wednesday. Then use the easier ‘Move’ class on Friday or Saturday.

If you are still struggling to find your weekly Pilates rhythm why not get in touch and book a 1:1 session and we can help you work it out!
